CHAPTER 14

“An assassin?” Rhianne shrieked.

Nel snorted. “Do you have to be so melodramatic?” He rolled his eyes. “That’s just one of the roles of a Shadow.”

“I must confess,” Toto said. “My mother used to recount tales of the Shadows to my sisters and me, intending to instil discipline and obedience.” He placed a paw over one of his eyes. “They are incredibly mysterious. They move with uncanny agility, blending seamlessly with the shadows, hence the name. They can slip in and out of places undetected, like whispers in the night.”

Nel patted Rhianne’s knee. “It’s Okay. They can’t get into your apartment.”

“Thanks to the wards you’ve set up?”

Nel shook his head. “While my wards might slow down a Shadow and trigger the alarm, they’d eventually figure out how to bypass them.”

Nel had always been pretty confident in the security his club’s wards offered, often bragging that they were impenetrable. However, his admission that Shadows could possibly break through those defences surprised her. It appeared that when he said “no one,” he didn’t mean these Shadows.

As if he’d heard her unspoken question, Nel added, “They might be able to get into the club but they wouldn’t be able to get into my apartment for the same reason they couldn’t get into yours.”

That reminded her of what Nel had said earlier. “Your signature.”

“It’s the same with your apartment,” Nel said.

“But they can obviously get into the garden nursery,” Rhianne said.

Nel’s apologetic look spoke volumes. “I didn’t expect to need wards in the nursery. I should fix that,” he said. “I’m not sure about your signature there, though.”

Toto nodded. “Indeed, it might be feasible. I will consult relevant scrolls to ascertain the required procedures.”

“I could ask Kai to set up cameras and a perimeter alarm system. I’m guessing their presence would trigger the technology, but even if not, it would help in detecting any other intruders,” she said.

Nel feigned puppy eyes. “Are you implying that you trust him more than me?” he waggled his eyebrows. “Ah, I see. Your date must have gone swimmingly.” He smirked.

“Actually, it was our third date,” Rhianne corrected him reflexively, her face flushing with a deep shade of crimson as she realised her slip-up.

Nel’s smile broadened. “I believe it’s high time I meet this Tech Mage of yours, don’t you agree, Toto?”

Toto’s head bobbed up and down. “He is indeed worthy,” Toto affirmed with a wag of his tail. “A true gentleman who fearlessly defended Rhianne and stood up to those foolish police officers who wanted to take her to the station. He put them in their place, he certainly did. And not to mention, he possesses impressive power reserves.”

Nel’s eyebrows shot up at Toto’s glowing assessment.

“He has a man crush,” Rhianne said with a grin and a wink.

“I don’t think he’s the only one.” Nel said.

A blush crept up Rhianne’s neck once more as she admitted, “True. And if you raise your eyebrows any higher, they might disappear.”

Nel raised his hands in a defensive gesture, a playful smirk forming on his face.
